How to become a Resident Producer?

To become an insurance producer you must complete the following requirements.

  1. Complete the pre-licensing requirement of 20 hours per line of authority; 7.5 of the 20 hours must be completed in a classroom setting i.e. life, Accident/Health, Fire (Property) Casualty, Personal Lines – Fire (Property) and Casualty. The only exception is Motor Vehicle of which 12.5 hours of pre-licensing and 5 hours must be in the classroom setting.
  2. Once you have completed your pre-licensing requirement you may then take the insurance examination. Please take a copy of your proof of completion for your pre-licensing course to the test center, you will not be allowed to sit for the exam without it.
  3. Please review the Insurance Licensing Examination Candidate Handbook. The handbook describes how, when and where to apply for the producer examination.
  4. When you pass the licensing examination you will be given your pass sheet along with an instruction sheet by the test administrator, Pearson VUE. Carefully read the instruction sheet and retain for your records. If you fail the exam, Pearson VUE will provide the results and the procedures to arrange for another exam.
  5. VERY IMPORTANT - Please wait five (5) days after passing your exam, at that time you will be able to apply online at www.nipr.com. Here are step by step directions to help you with the application process.

Additional Information

You MUST wait 5 days after passing your exam, to apply for your license.

Illinois is using the last day of your birth month as your expiration date and the fee paid for licensure through NIPR will be prorated for the birth month expiration date.

Once you have completed the application process through NIPR and you have received an e-mail from them that is was a successful transaction your application will be submitted to Illinois.

Effective 8-1-2012, Illinois now requires that you apply for your license electronically. Please see the company bulletin at http://insurance2.illinois.gov/cb/2012/CB2012-02.pdf

Uniform application for Individual Producer License/Registration

Bond Requirement

An insurance producer who places insurance either directly or indirectly with an insurer with which the insurance producer does not have an agent contract must maintain in force while licensed a bond in favor of the people of the State of Illinois executed by an authorized surety company and payable to any party injured under the terms of the bond. The bond shall be continuous in form and in the amount of $2500 or 5% of the premiums brokered in the previous calendar year whichever is greater, but not to exceed $50,000 total aggregate liability. Such bond should remain at the place of business however the producer must provide the information within 3 working days after receiving a request, should the information be requested.

Important Information for Renewal

COMPLETE YOUR CE EARLY. THERE IS NO EXTENSION TO COMPLETE YOUR CE AND IF YOU ARE LATE A PENALTY FEE OF DOUBLE THE UNPAID LICENSE FEE WILL BE ASSESSED.

  1. You must be CE compliant at least ten (10) business days prior to your renewal date.
  2. CE compliant means:
    • Complete 24 hours of course study of which 2 of those hours must consist of in the classroom ethics.
    • The CE hours must be on SBS at least 10  business days from the date the CE provider banked them to your record.
    • Please Note - your education provider has 10 days from the Saturday after you take the exam to send your results to the Department. IL. Admin Rules Title 50 3119.45(b)(1) states "...The producer should complete the course not later than 1 month prior to the license extension date to allow time for the provide rto submit proof of completion to the Director..."

Look Up Your CE Hours on File

  1. Please go to www.statebasedsystems.com
  2. Click on "Print your Education Transcript"
  3. From the drop down enter "Illinois"
  4. Enter your last name
  5. Enter the last 4 digits of your SSN
  6. At the drop down "Choose One" click on National Producer Number
  7. At next box enter your NPN #
  8. Click on Search
  9. Scroll down until you see a button "View education transcript". Click on that button.
  10. A new window should pop up and you can print or view the CE that has been reported for you.

Expired License - Resident Reinstate Directions

Go to www.nipr.com

  1. Click on “Apply for License
  2. At “Know which application you need?” Click on “Resident Licensing”
  3. Under “RL State Requirements” scroll down and click on Illinois.
  4. On the left hand side of the screen in green click on “APPLY HERE”
  5. Scroll to bottom of the USE AGREEMENT page and click on “Accept”
  6. At” Resident State:” use the drop down and select “Illinois”
  7. At “License Type” click on the dot next to “Individual”
  8. Click on the dot by “Apply for a new Resident License, add a Life of Authority, OR resume an existing application”.
  9. At “SSN or FEIN” enter your SSN#
  10. Enter Last name at next box then click “Next”
  11. The next page lists the lines of authority (LOA) and License Class, chose the LOA you are reinstating, then click “Next”.
  12. PERSONAL DATA page – please review and fill in the information paying special attention to the areas marked with a red *
  13. BUSINESS DATA page - At next page enter you business information, underneath you can give us your business address to be added to your record or just click on the dot by “Use Residential Address”  Click on “Next”
  14. MAILING ADDRESS page - At this page you may choose to give us a different mailing address or use your resident or business address, please choose one and click on “Next”
  15. ALIASES page - At next page enter any Alias’ you may have used and click “Next”
  16. AGENCY OR BUSINESS ENTITY AFFILIATIONS  page - Illinois does not require affiliations, please scroll down and click on “Next”
  17. EMPLOYMENT HISTORY  page - At this page you must enter 5 years of employment history then click on “Next”
  18. BACKGROUND page - Please answer all background questions following all instructions given, click “Next”
  19. APPLICANTS CERTIFICATION AND ATTESTATION page - Read the Attestations and click on the dot by “Agree”, then click “Next”
  20. VERIFICATION EMAIL  page - Please enter an email address for a verification email then click “Next”
  21. SUBMITTER page - At this page, if you are the producer please click the dot next to “Yourself” then click “Next". If you are an Authorized Submitter you must complete all information then click on “Next"
  1. FEE DETAILS page - The next page tells you what your fees are, review and click on “next” (your fee maybe prorated as our expiration dates are birth month)
  2. Please click the dot next to how you want to pay; billing details will automatically come up on the left hand side of the screen, fill them in and press “Next”.

How to Renew Your Resident Producer License

 Go to www.nipr.com

  1.  Click on “Apply for License”
  2. At “Select a type of application” click on the drop down and select “Renew License”
  3. At “Select the state in which you wish to apply” click on the drop down and select “Illinois”
  4. At “Are you a resident or a non-resident of that state?” click on the drop down and select “ Resident”
  5.  select “Individual”.
  6. Click on “Continue
  7. At this page click on the green “APPLY HERE”
  8. At USE AGREEMENT page, scroll to the bottom and click on “Accept”
  9. At this next page click on the drop down at “Resident State” and select “Illinois”
  10. “License Type:” click on the dot next to “Individual”
  11. “What do you want to do:” click on the dot next to “Apply to renew an existing Resident License OR resume an existing renewal application.
  12. Under “Resident License Renewal” heading  enter your NPN number then your “License Number” (NPN# again)
  13. Click on “NEXT”
  14. Under “License Class” make sure the dot next to “Producer” has been marked and all of your Lines of Authority are listed, click on “NEXT”
  15. PERSONAL DATA page, complete any biographical information that has a red * and has not already been filled in for you, click on “NEXT”
  16. AGENCY OR BUSINESS ENTITY AFFILIATIONS page is not required by Illinois, you may skip this and click on the “NEXT” button.
  17. BACKGROUND QUESTIONS answer all of the questions truthfully and click on “NEXT”
  18. APPLICANT’S CERTIFICATION AND ATTESTATION page, read carefully then click on the box next to “Agree”, click on the “NEXT” button.
  19. VERIFICATION EMAIL page select or add an email address to have your verification message sent to then click “NEXT”
  20. SUBMITTER page, if you are completing the application for yourself, click on the dot next to the word “Yourself” if you are filling this out for someone else, please indicate that and complete the rest of the form. Click on “NEXT”
  21. FEE DETAILS , this page informs you of the fee required for the renewal.  Click on “NEXT”
  22. Choose Payment Type page, click on the method you wish to pay and complete the “Billing Details” paying special attention to the red *.  Click on “Next”
  23. This is as far as this instructions sheet can go with you, please print out anything that you are allowed to print for your records.

My Name has Changed. How do I change my License?

 Mail in a signed request (including your NPN #) over your signature to:

Include one of the following proof of name change items with your request

  • A copy of your marriage license
  • A copy of your driver’s license, displaying your new name

How to Print Your License

 You are entitled to one free license print from this website.

  1. 1. Go to www.statebasedsystems.com
  2. Click on "Print Your License"
  3. From the drop down click on Illinois
  4. Do not change the entity type unless you are tryin gto print a Business Entity license
  5. Enter Last Name or if Business entity enter the FEIN number
  6. If individual enter the last 4 digits of the SSN
  7. At "Choose One" select National Producer Number and fill in that number in the next box
  8. Click on Search
  9. A new window should pop up, this is your license to print.
  10. We recommend you save your license to your computer should you need to print it again

The license is displayed on the screen in a PDf file format. Simply click the floppy disk icon at the top left of the license, or on the File menu, select Save As. A good place to save the license is on your desktop-handy for printing or emailing.
